Job Title: Graduate Resident Assistant (Sport)

Location: Casterton, Sedbergh Prep School

Contract Type: Full Time, Fixed Term for the academic year 2023/24

Salary: £12,000 per annum, plus accommodation and board

Start Date: September 2023

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, Provost of Eton, is an Independent Co-educational Boarding School. The Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and the Headmaster of the Prep School is a member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.  

Casterton, Sedbergh Prep School is situated in a spectacular rural location in the Lune Valley; an ideal place for living out the ethos of allowing children to be children. We strive to realise the potential in all of our pupils, from the stage to the sports pitch.   

We are now seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team as Graduate Resident Assistants, covering both Boys’ and Girls’ sport, on fixed term contracts for one academic year (2023/2024). There are two posts available, ideally suited to outstanding graduates who wish to pursue a career in teaching and would like to gain a year of experience in a supportive environment.

We will consider applicants with any specialism, but are particularly looking for candidates who can contribute to the high quality extra-curricular programme, so a qualification or interest in one of the following would be advantageous:   

  • Rugby 
  • Cricket 

  • Netball 

  • Hockey  

Depending upon the candidates’ specialism, the general requirements of the role will be to:  

  • Assist in the coaching of girls’ games (netball, hockey, athletics and cricket) or boys’ games (rugby, hockey and cricket). There is also a strong culture in other sports such as cross country, riding, swimming and tennis; 

  • Play an active role in the busy boarding community, playing a full part in the pastoral care of the children, within a dynamic and enthusiastic team; 

  • Reside in the boarding house with approximately 20-30 8-13 year olds and help with prep, activities, weekend sports, trips and outdoor activities; 

  • Provide assistance in the classroom, fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of a teaching assistant; 

  • Support the department in administrative tasks.

Casterton, Sedbergh Prep School is very much accustomed to the training and induction of young staff and the successful candidates will be carefully guided through their time here. Many of our previous GRAs have gone on to successful teaching careers, some within the School itself!

Essential Qualifications  

  • Educated to degree level. 

 Essential Characteristics  

  • Strong interpersonal skills coupled with a genuine interest in a career in teaching and a passion for education; 

  • Personable, enthusiastic team player; 

  • Sustained energy and a sense of humour; 

  • The ability to relate to and empathise with children and young people; 

  • A sense of authority: firm but fair; 

  • Excellent administrative, organisational and ICT abilities; 

  • A proactive approach to engaging with young people is essential; 

  • A willingness to share expertise.  

Desirable Characteristics  

  • Familiarity with boarding education.
