Sedbergh School seek a Head of Rugby from September 2025. The Head of Rugby is a high profile position at Sedbergh. Leading the game in the school is a multi-faceted challenge demanding a natural gravitas and a wide skill set. This includes technical and tactical experience, as well as management ability, empathy and an ability to communicate extensively with a range of constituencies.
The Head of Rugby will be the principal coach of the 1st XV and 1st VII, and will lead the team of assistant coaches, conditioners, analysts and medics who support this squad. Successful experience of coaching at an appropriate level is essential. Coaching at other levels of the school, including a regular involvement with the Prep School, will also be important, alongside responsibility for supporting and developing all teachers, coaches and support staff who contribute to the game. The successful candidate will manage all aspects of the operation of the game, including the competition programme, match arrangements, referee and coach allocations. Strong administrative skills and computer literacy will be necessary to enable this.

Sedbergh School is uniquely situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It enjoys a spectacular location at the foot of the Howgill Fells, and the rural situation is integral to the school’s identity. The Sedbergh community has approximately 580 pupils (age 13–18) and 480 staff. Its prep school (Nursery to Year 8) of around 200 pupils is situated 15 minutes away in Casterton. The school is a vibrant, demanding and supportive community, which encourages staff and pupils to be involved in as broad a range of activities and interests as possible.
Sedbergh is a full boarding school. It currently has the highest pupil roll in its 500 year history, and demand for places remains buoyant. Pupils are members of one of nine boarding houses, all of which have their own buildings, dedicated dining rooms, social spaces and gym. All staff contribute to the wider pastoral life of the school.
At the most recent inspection, the school was graded ‘Excellent’ in every category of provision by ISI; pupils’ personal awareness and the provision of extra-curricular opportunities were identified as particular strengths.
