Mr Harry John Nicholas Hurst
In my experiences I have been able to work in some challenging environments with some inspiring teachers that have helped me in deciding what the best career is. One of these examples was when I was a PE teaching assistant in a school in London, through this I was able to gain valuable experience and observe some of the best adaptive and EAL teaching as the community surrounding the school was predominantly a South Asian community. In my role at the school, I worked alongside a PE specialist who led the delivery of PE throughout the school, it was a four-form entry state school so being organised and working well as a team was fundamental to success. In the delivery of the lessons, I was able to first assist and observe then go onto to lead sessions in age groups ranging from five to eleven in different skills and sports. With this I also took on after school clubs and took children to competitions in the local area and the main highlight being a first girls football competition where despite limited experience and training, they were able to win a match. This then led to more enthusiasm for girls’ competition and more signing up to the after-school clubs. In addition to these experiences, I have been able to work in wraparound care within a primary school setting where I was able to interact with children and run games and interact with parents daily. I have experience in holiday camps where again I was fully engaged with running activities for primary school children and having clear boundaries on behaviour. Throughout these experiences I have been able to build up a strong variety of sports and activities and how they can be made engaging and how also non-traditional sports can be turned into something that would still achieve your session and lesson objectives. Sport and physical activity play a big part in my life as I am a keen follower and participant in cricket. I also am a long-distance runner and in 2024 I am going to take part in a half marathon. I follow football, rugby, tennis, and I gain enjoyment out of them as they are a nice escape and it is always fascinating to see the different techniques, tactics and challenges they must get through.

I pride myself on being highly motivated, hardworking and someone who has a strong desire to work in a challenging, rewarding and worthwhile profession.  I am calm and composed when under pressure, always meet deadlines, and I can quickly establish excellent relationships with students and colleagues which is a vital attribute of a PE and Games Teacher. I have a good sense of humour and relentless enthusiasm when working with students which I believe are essential qualities of an outstanding teacher. I gain immense fulfilment when working with children of all ages, genders and abilities supporting them to achieve their full educational potential. I believe that sport provides an avenue that gives students, who may find other subjects more challenging, opportunities to succeed - raising their self-confidence, participation and sense of inclusion. I continually strive to achieve excellence in all my lessons by creating a positive and safe environment that is conducive to learning. An environment where pupils with differing aspirations can gain invaluable preparation for the world beyond school. Such activities make considerable contributions to local communities and assist schools in forging links with affiliations and local sports clubs. As a committed PE teacher I am passionate in my belief that participation in regular physical activity, recreational or competitive, increases their feeling of self- worth whilst enjoying the opportunities sport provides.

With over 13 years’ experience providing engaging & structured physical education in high-performing preparatory schools, I am certain to bring seasoned expertise in student development to any school. I am a stickler for being on time, disciplined and have the ability to improvise, adapt and overcome a situation when it is needed. These values were instilled during my 12 years in the British Army. I did not come into teaching the conventional way of university, so I have learnt from day one from the coaches and PE teachers that I have worked with or come across. Also, I would take note of what the heads of the department go through within their own daily routines. With that, I have made myself into an inspiring, confident, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, PE teacher and more recently a leader, manager and role model that encourages exercise and a healthy approach to daily life. My time as Head of PE at The Hampshire School Chelsea, sees me set high expectations so that all students are inspired, motivated & challenged to reach their full potential, with a commitment to my pupils and the quality of their experiences by catering for the range of needs of all the students & I provide a stimulating, happy, safe & supportive learning environment.            As a Teacher of PE in both Hampshire and Hill House School, I planned & taught well-structured, differentiated lessons for EYFS to Year 8 that aligned to the agreed curriculum & cultivated intellectual curiosity in my students. I was responsible for the educational development of my classes, delivering an age-appropriate curriculum. I made sure to foster positive self-esteem in my pupils & hold high expectations of their work & behaviour. All of this has allowed me to develop a mastery of PE as a subject along with general teaching pedagogy. Of course, ensuring the wellbeing of students & safeguarding them is my ultimate concern. I am extremely hard working and committed to delivering high quality teaching and learning to improve and raise standards wherever I am. I believe in motivating children to be their best selves, instilling an appreciation of learning across the curriculum.
