Ryan Cartwright
My name is Ryan Cartwright. I am an ex-professional cricketer/athlete, physical education teacher and sports coach with a specialisation in cricket. I am currently doing a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education), and I will be a fully qualified Life Orientation teacher in the Senior and FET (Further Education and Training) phase in December 2022.   I am passionate about people, sports, education and developing young leaders for our future. The impact my teachers and coaches had on my life and their influence has had a profound effect on how I have lived my life, how I deal with people and the relationships that I’ve built over my 30 years.   There is a special link between sports and education. There is so much learning and opportunity for growth in the sports field and that is something that consistently motivates me in making a positive impact on the learners that I am working with. I believe in looking after the needs of the individual that leaves a major impact on that child’s life is the priority. There is so much power we hold in education and that’s why I feel that it’s even more reason to use that power with responsibility. I believe that good people make good teachers and those good teachers are people that put others first.   I’d like to pursue teaching Physical Education and Life Orientation. My personal goals and aspirations include completing my PGCE this year (2022) and then working within a school with a vision, ambition and drive that equals or supersedes my own. I am a student of life and a life-long learner. I love a challenge and improving myself consistently, this is a huge part of my aspirations and therefore my personal development is crucial in continually progressing myself for me to be able to successfully provide a high-quality work ethic and service to those I work with and teach. My experience in education has allowed me to build children up, creating an environment where individuals can express themselves, grow, and learn effectively. This was my goal all along. I believe strongly in effective communication and teaching children how to improve on their communication skills. Working within a school will allow me to make an impact on a personal level. It will also allow me to lead by example and be a positive role model in a child’s life. Sport has always been my platform; therefore, coaching has been at the forefront of my working relationships and connections with the people that I have worked with. I have over 10 years of sports coaching experience. I would consider myself open-minded, honest, caring, and intuitive. I am a people person and passionate about growth and development. Teaching speaks to my interpersonal qualities, besides creating an environment for children to learn within their lives. I’d like to think that my classroom is not bound by its four walls or the boundaries of the field, but rather making the world their classroom, learning in as many facets of their lives. This leads to good human beings, not just students, being present in a world that is forever changing, and finding their voice and power to change the world in their vision. The passion for what I do is seen by those around me, creating an environment that always leads to an unquenchable thirst for growth. I want to help build foundations for children to use and flourish from. Everyone has the potential to be great, they just need some help. I like to view it as a fire that I have within that will spread to all the children I teach and coach. My purpose has always been to change the world, I guess that world is not my generation's world but the generations to come. I am currently employed at a private school in White River, South Africa, called Uplands. I work with children from the ages of 5 to 18. I am a physical education teacher, and sports coach, with a specialised focus on cricket. I have the role of Head of Cricket at Uplands Preparatory School (ages 5 to 13) and manage the cricket operations within the Preparatory School. I also coach cricket at the College (ages 14 to 18) and have been completing my teaching practice there too. I teach Life Orientation (PHSE, Life Skills). I am looking at potentially immigrating to another country, particularly Europe or the United Kingdom, but am also open to other options abroad.

I’m a driven and extremely experienced ‘UEFA A LICENCE’ football coach. I was a professional footballer for 20 years and played nearly 500 matches, winning 4 promotions in that time. I’ve worked with and under some of the best coaches and managers in England.  I would like now to pass on my years of knowledge and experience to others including the younger generation. I’m used to being successful but also know it’s hard work that brings that. I set high standards of myself and demand that from those I work with also.

With over 13 years’ experience providing engaging & structured physical education in high-performing preparatory schools, I am certain to bring seasoned expertise in student development to any school. I am a stickler for being on time, disciplined and have the ability to improvise, adapt and overcome a situation when it is needed. These values were instilled during my 12 years in the British Army. I did not come into teaching the conventional way of university, so I have learnt from day one from the coaches and PE teachers that I have worked with or come across. Also, I would take note of what the heads of the department go through within their own daily routines. With that, I have made myself into an inspiring, confident, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, PE teacher and more recently a leader, manager and role model that encourages exercise and a healthy approach to daily life. My time as Head of PE at The Hampshire School Chelsea, sees me set high expectations so that all students are inspired, motivated & challenged to reach their full potential, with a commitment to my pupils and the quality of their experiences by catering for the range of needs of all the students & I provide a stimulating, happy, safe & supportive learning environment.            As a Teacher of PE in both Hampshire and Hill House School, I planned & taught well-structured, differentiated lessons for EYFS to Year 8 that aligned to the agreed curriculum & cultivated intellectual curiosity in my students. I was responsible for the educational development of my classes, delivering an age-appropriate curriculum. I made sure to foster positive self-esteem in my pupils & hold high expectations of their work & behaviour. All of this has allowed me to develop a mastery of PE as a subject along with general teaching pedagogy. Of course, ensuring the wellbeing of students & safeguarding them is my ultimate concern. I am extremely hard working and committed to delivering high quality teaching and learning to improve and raise standards wherever I am. I believe in motivating children to be their best selves, instilling an appreciation of learning across the curriculum.

Coaching and teaching sport has always been an incentive of mine from a young age, as I have been given countless opportunities to participate in sports at various levels, and complete numerous coaching qualifications. Sport within a scholastic setting is very much person centred, with positive interactions vital for student’s success and development of knowledge, skills, and desire to achieve and excel. Coaching will allow me to create an environment where students’ build character, developing personal attributes and engage more in the theoretical underpinnings of sport. The knowledge I have gained within my BSc Coaching and Sport Science degree (Nottingham Trent University) has allowed me to take a step back and critically think about how to students learn, with a large portion of a successful environment coming from the coach themselves. I believe I have the attributes to make a difference, engaging students to learn and benefit from sport. Furthermore, the challenges I have overcome in my degrees have prepared me for the workload and pressures of coaching within a scholastic or professional setting. My current postgraduate degree within Loughborough University in MSc Strength and Conditioning, has vastly improved my coaching ability and knowledge specifically within training athletes the fundamentals in S&C. Modules within injury prevention, neuromuscular training, and applied S&C science has allowed me to put my theoretical understanding into my coaching. I’m currently a part of an intern program within Loughborough Sport women’s BUCS rugby and basketball team, in which I plan periodized training programs which focus on developing sport specific training practices, run S&C on training and match days, and run small rehabilitation sessions on Mondays. I also provide S&C and warmups for the Loughborough Sport Women’s COE rugby group, where these specific athletes are training to become Loughborough Lightening athletes with some playing at a professional level. The experience I have will suit the Sports Professional role as I’m consistently helping develop athletes to their full potential. Other coaching experience and qualifications I have such as level 1 coaching in football, level 2 in dodgeball and Gold SSLSA (40+ coaching hours within school PE department) have allowed me to connect and develop key interpersonal relationship qualities and develop administrative and pastoral skills highly relevant for this role. Also, knowledge and experience playing in hockey, rugby, and netball as well as a vast interest in Olympic sports will prepare me for the challenges I will face and overcome in my future career. Aside from my teaching experience, I have also worked as front of house using my communication and teamwork skills, working with others to provide a happy and helpful service to customers. I am confident in what I do, committed to my development as an effective coach. My future will be to continue coaching in a highly respectful sport environment, developing my expertise, with the option of completing a PGCE (sport) course. My philosophy of coaching is believing the best way to coach someone is to see them as a person. Not a sprinter, rugby player, nor an athlete – a person. Well-being and personal biopsychospiritual homeostasis is paramount within developing a young person’s qualities. I believe sport can offer an opportunity for young people to develop skills and prepare them for life outside of sport and school. A coach can have an everlasting impact on a student’s life, and I adhere to creating an environment where students fully engage and enjoy the qualities sport provides. I hope this personal statement takes into consideration the passion I have to grow and develop into the best practitioner I can be.

After a professional sporting career lasting over 18 years, I successfully transitioned into coaching both locally and professionally . Over the last 10 years of coaching, I have positively impacted young students that are currently playing sports at semi-professional, professional and international levels. Coaching has provided me with the opportunity to work with young people of mixed genders and all age groups, from various social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ranging from summer camps and school tours/ ECA's to working in Elite Professional Football Academies. Having recently completed my Master’s degree in performance coaching, alongside teachers and coaches of Tennis, Netball, Rugby and Cycling from around the world, it further substantiated my belief that there are numerous similarities and transferable skills between high performance coaching and teaching. As such, 18 months ago, I successfully applied for a sports coaching role with Kellett British International School, Hong Kong. The sports coach role quickly developed into a PE Coaching role, split between the Co-educational; (Prep) Pok Fu Lam campus and the larger (All Through) Kowloon Bay campus, that develops students aged 4 to 18. Whereby my positive character, interpersonal skills, organisation and collaboration into the departments, garnered trust for me to both assist and lead multi-sports PE, Games, Extra- Curricular activities and teams, on and off both campuses. I believe that my passion to become a qualified teacher of Physical Education, in addition to my experience, skills and background, make me an excellent potential candidate for Coaching/Graduate Assistant sporting roles. I am conscientious in my duties and work well within a team environment, however I am also experienced and confident enough to use initiative and take a proactive approach to supporting the needs of staff and pupils, qualities that I feel, should, align with the vision and ethos of any potential employers. It would be a pleasure to further share with you and elaborate on my previous experiences. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at +852 93303617 or email at waynethomas579@gmail.com . Thank you for your consideration, Wayne
